2010 CalNex Field Study and “Expanding to the Downwind WRAP Region” (6/10/09)
Regional technical analyses for the Western United States available on the WRAP Technical Support System, to support the development of air pollution control plans required under the EPA Regional Haze Rule, have shown that sources contribute the primary and secondary chemical precursor species comprising Particulate Matter that transport from tens to thousands of kilometers. The precursor emissions and resulting ambient gases and aerosols affect both rural and urban areas, and impact primary air quality health standards (Ozone and PM NAAQS), as well as secondary air quality welfare standards (Ozone, PM, Regional Haze Rule, Nitrogen deposition). The spatial scale affecting the more than 100 relatively clean Class I Federal areas across the West ranges from global to regional to local. The 2010 CalNex field study is under development by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A joint NOAA-WRAP informational presentation was given at the April 2009 WESTAR Council meeting, based on materials from NOAA and a white paper prepared by a working group from the WRAP Technical Oversight Committee. Discussions with NOAA and NASA have been initiated to review opportunities to leverage and extend the field study effort in 2010 within California to the downwind WRAP region. Presentation materials from a June 9th organizational meeting (PDF or DOC) were provided by NOAA (PDF-2MB or PPT-5.5MB) and WRAP (PDF-6.5MB or PPT-7.8MB). Action items and followup materials will be prepared and distributed. Please contact Tom Moore for more information.

Technical Oversight Committee completes 2 workshops as input to 2009-10 WRAP Workplan (8/5/08)
The TOC has completed 2 workshops to develop technical needs, priorities, and projects for the 2009-10 WRAP workplan. Click on the these links for the results of the May 15-16 workshop on Monitoring & Data for Regional Analysis and the July 29-30 workshop on Regional Emissions & Air Quality Modeling Studies. Focused on air quality planning and management needs, the 3rd and final workshop will address Regional Support for Air Quality Planning in the West, specifically for WRAP Air Managers. The workshop will be on September 30-October 1 in Seattle immediately before the WESTAR Council Fall meeting - logistics for this workshop are at: http://www.wrapair.org/cal/calendar.php?op=view&id=804.

GIS Landuse Database (8/8/05) - The purpose of this project was to develop updated, current year (2000-04) GIS databases for use in air quality and emission inventory development efforts. These data will be used in air quality analysis and support of source attribution/apportionment activities; improvement of near-field activity data and analysis of emissions strengths; provide more uniform landuse and demographic data to make temporally consistent regional estimates of biogenics, ammonia, and windblown dust emissions; providing a consistent set of baseline data for area source activity data and planning; and identify and apply appropriate GIS data layers for Canada and Mexico. Deliverables for the project include technical memos and appendices summarizing Identification of Relevant GIS Data and Sources, GIS Data Evaluation, and a final report entitled "Development of Current Year GIS Databases for Air Quality and Emission Inventory Development and Analysis for the WRAP". For more information, please contact Tom Moore or Lee Alter.
