Communications Committee: Meetings & Calls

Committee Conference Call Minutes
June 14, 2000

PRESENT:

Al Zemsky, Barry Aarons, Dan Clark, Liza Daley, Cyra Cain, Ruth McCormick, Charley Malarkey for Pat Port, Carl Bowman, Dennis Haddow, Colleen Delaney for Market Trading Forum, Bill Grantham.

NEXT MEETING:

Conference call on Thursday, June 22 at 1:00 pm MDT.

CORRECT EMAIL ADDRESS:

Dennis Haddow's email is dhaddow@fs.fed.us.

ARIZONA MEETING:

Liza can arrange for proper setup of the Flagstaff meeting. Barry will talk to Arizona DAQ staff again, and with Liza. Carl Bowman can help some.

MATERIALS FOR THE PUBLIC MEETING:

Jan sent out draft materials this morning and wants feedback by tomorrow, particularly about the agenda and the script for the chairperson. The PowertPoint presentation may have to be distributed to the users on a compact disk because the file is so big. Dan noted that Jeff Lemke now has the WRAP 201 presentation in 2 jpg files which he emailed successfully to Dan yesterday. But the quality is not as good, and we want good quality for the public meetings.

Colleen has put together the PowerPoint slides for the MTF presentation but will be working on the script through the weekend. She was urged to keep the MTF presentation to no more than 20 minutes. For the Congressional briefing a broader overview may be best. Colleen may keep the slides but use a different script for the congressional briefing.

CONGRESSIONAL BRIEFING:

Ruth is arranging a third briefing on June 19 at 4:00 pm in the Hall of the States and sending invitations to the Washington offices of the western states, the media, environmental groups and other stakeholders. The film crew from Executive Web TV may cover it and post on their Web site if there is no more pressing news at the time. CC members should urge attendance, and call their governor's offices to get them to urge attendance by their D.C. staff.

PBS BROADCAST:

Dan reported that KUED in Salt Lake City and KCWC in Wyoming will tape the June meetings. KUED will use the footage as an intro for a 30 minute program with a panel discussion, to be taped sometime in August and aired before Sept 7, the close of the comment period. Suggest names for panel members to Dan Clark; we are looking for the best representatives from the various stakeholder groups. Bill Grantham will find a tribal representative. Dan will work with KUED in distribution to other states. KUED broadcasts to a wide geographic area including Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada and northern Arizona. KCWC will use the June meeting footage and add interviews with key persons at some Class I areas.

Dan urged that we do our best to get tape of all the public meetings for use in the future in various ways.

SUMMARIZING PUBLIC COMMENTS:

Summaries of the public comments will be prepared in Salt Lake City the week of July 10. Jan Miller and Dennis Haddow will represent the Communications Committee; Liza will talk with Virgil Masayesva about getting a tribal person. The Market Trading Forum will identify 2-3 participants. (Note: The MTF will be meeting in SLC on July 13 and the IOC on July 14; it would be very helpful if they have the comment summaries by then.

MONTHLY STATUS REPORTS:

Cyra has posted the first monthly status report for the Research and Development Forum and asks that we review it. She will contact other liaisons to urge prompt postings for other forums and will set an expected date for each month's submittal.

NEW WEB SITE:

Jennifer Lodder is ready to have a 2-week beta test for the new site;

Cyra will send the address and all should review soon. Send comments to Cyra.

THANKS TO LIZA AND CYRA:

Al thanked Liza for all her hard work in getting the Web site completed; we will miss her greatly as she leaves us. He also thanked Cyra for being willing to chair the Web site subcommittee in Liza's place. We will need another person for that subcommittee, and Liza has a prospect in mind.

FEDERAL REGISTER NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETINGS:

The notice has gone out and should be published shortly.

AUGUST MEETING DATES:

Charley reported that New Mexico has tentatively set August 22 but hasn't decided whether to hold it in Santa Fe or Albuquerque. Jan reported that the Utah meeting will be on August 30 at 7:00 pm in Room 101 DEQ Bldg, 168 N. 1950 West, Salt Lake City. We will put the dates we have onto the handouts for the June meetings.
